Live From Your Office -- It's Teleconferencing!

Teleconferencing can reduce expenses and travel time only if you are motivating your audience on camera the same way you would in person.  Don't let discomfort with the technology or a too casual attitude destroy your business persona.

  • Be conversational.  Unless you have return video, you won’t see your audience.   Treat the camera as the person or group to whom you are speaking.  As silly as it sounds, joke with the camera, call its attention to key points, converse with it -- in short, create a relationship with the lens.  The ease you then display makes your invisible audience more comfortable.

  • Vary eye contact and movement.  To avoid camera stare, sit eight to ten inches away, lower your eyelids occasionally, and glance away briefly. Change positions and gesture subtly just as you would in person.

  • Place your notes beside the camera.  A downward look at notes can take you out of camera range or, worse, give air time to the back of your head.

  • Dress the part.  Dark solids are best.  Bold stripes and prints as well as bright reds vibrate, drawing attention from your message.

Remember, you are still "seated" at the meeting, creating relationships, finalizing plans and closing deals.  With the right preparation, you can now be effective "live" from the comfort and convenience of your office.
