Good Morning America anchors recently reported we spend 15 hours a week just cleaning out our e-mail in-boxes. Many of these e-mails are one- or two-word confirmations of receipt or a thanks for information sent. While we happen to like these acknowledgments, many executives do not.
If your recipients view these messages as in-box litter:
- Limit your reply to a "thank you" on the subject line rather than creating a new e-mail.
- Resist pressing "reply all" and populating everyone's in-box with your acknowledgment.
- Consider sending a response only when the information received was time critical or receipt might be questioned.
Is someone cluttering your in-box? Try adding a "No Reply Needed" (NRN in some office cultures) to your subject line.
