Speech Phobia -- End That Paralyzing Fear

Surveys agree.  Among the three greatest fears -- airplane flight, public speaking and death, public speaking is number one!  To reduce that fear:

  • Script the first and final 30 seconds of your presentation. This guarantees a strong entrance and exit.
  • Arrive early enough to become comfortable with the lectern/speaking location and check the microphone (if needed).  Taking possession of the space from your point of view helps control your concern.
  • Circulate among the audience before the presentation.  This makes your speech a continuation with acquaintances rather than a sudden thrust into the spotlight.

There is no quick fix, but these approaches can help reduce your speech phobia to slight trepidation.
