Shorter Meetings, Stronger Morale

Interminable meetings decrease work efficiency and reduce morale.  If you are conducting a meeting:

  • Plan and distribute an agenda, including time limit for each item.  Set a definitive time for concluding as well as convening.
  • Keep to the schedule, even alerting participants to a "three minutes left before we move on" indicator.
  • Interrupt attention seekers gently but firmly, rather than allowing them to take control.
  • Finish on time to set the precedent for future meetings.

If you are attending a meeting:

  • Stick to the point and keep your contributions brief.
  • Cooperate with the leader to follow the allotted time in the agenda.

Shorter, more productive meetings show respect for everyone's time.  This increases attendance and improves morale.
