Face it. Most people read an executive summary to pre-determine their interest in a company, idea, even the remainder of a report. As a result, that poorly written summary may close the door on any future opportunity no matter how effective the rest of your document. Take charge:
- Be concise! Limit that summary to 10% of the length of the written material.
- Make it stand alone. Create a story that can be read without the rest of the document.
- Don't cut and paste. Summarize!
- Omit abbreviations, technical jargon and buzzwords.
- Leave out information about methods of data capture, tables and figures.
- Don't start writing the summary until you have completed the remainder of the report.
By enabling your audiences to quickly grasp and respond to the information you have compiled, you open doors to future business.
