Turn A Presentation Mistake Into A Lucky Break

Your presentation is going well . . . that is, until you mistakenly report three million people supported the proposal under discussion.  You redden, start shifting papers and stammer that you meant to say three thousand, not three million.  The audience, now uncomfortable because you're embarrassed, begins hoping you can get through the speech rather than listening to what you have to say.

To avoid losing control:

  • Take a deep breath and smile at the audience.
  • Acknowledge the error calmly.
  • If possible, make a joke.  The speaker who corrects himself with an "I wish we had three million.  We'd be in great shape,"  remains at ease, laughs with the audience and is able to move on.

In reality, your flub could create an even better relationship with your listeners. Relax and turn that presentation mistake into a lucky break!
