Oh Say, Can You See?

Are you charming?  Known for getting your point across?  Good traits, but are you really communicating?  Unless you are watching your listener's body language, you're just talking.  That listener's lack of encouragement -- dead eyes, looking around the room, impatient shifting, etc., -- signals that conversation is going only one-way. To engage your listener:

-  Ask him questions, rather than focusing on your business, your life, and your interests.  Remember, it's not just about you!

-  Search for some common ground by introducing new subjects  It may take a few attempts, but try to overcome those "thuds" with new efforts.

- Give positive feedback when he does talk.  Nod, show interest, and add points to which he can respond.

Now you're beginning to converse.  Tried everything but still not connecting?  Move on.  The chemistry, or the lack thereof, may indicate this business or personal relationship is not meant to be.

From Claudia Coplon and Steve Clements of Executive Speak/Write, oral and written communications trainers who want to ensure your communications skills include listening to your audience on every level.
