Make Your Subject Line Work For You

Executives will ignore 33% of the e-mails received no matter how often you pressed Urgent or High Priority.  To ensure you get read, use your subject line to:

  • Orient your reader.  Quick recognition of the subject matter encourages faster readership and assists in filing.
  • Establish deadlines.  Need an answer by June 20?  Include that in your subject line so your reader prioritizes a response.
  • Specify time zones where appropriate.  Remember your East Coast EOB or COB is three hours earlier than that of the West Coast recipient.
  • Replace flat statements with more interesting verbiage to generate enthusiasm.

For instance, rather than "Can We Meet?" or "New Product Data Sheets" try:

"ESW Strategic Plan Requires Attention By June 20"
"Can You Discuss J. Brown's Emergency Phone Call At 3:00 P.M. EST June 8?"
"New Product Data Sheets Will Help You Close Sales"

Only by getting read can you accomplish your goals.  Don't get lost in the e-mail shuffle.
