Remember the days of justified right margins and colons following Dear Whoever? It was indicative of the times -- make your writing aloof to impress the reader with your professionalism. Today we use ragged right margins and commas, rather than colons, because we don't want to put our reader at a distance. Relax your rigidity when writing so you bring the reader in.
To be more personally professional,
- Replace that off-putting formality -- use because rather than due to the fact that, and if rather than in the event that.
- Drop the in order that rarely adds anything but additional copy -- to instead of in order to, and for instead of in order for.
- Use those simple, quick-to-grasp words -- try instead of endeavor, improve instead of ameliorate.
Keep your reader at arm's length by being aloof and you risk losing the business interaction. Convey approachability and you nurture a business relationship.
