Buzz words, so second-nature in today's technical, administrative and popular cultures, often lead to misinterpretation or, worse, loss of your audience's attention. Instead of understanding what you have to say, those outside your immediate environment receive blurred, confusing messages and think a little less of your credibility. To end the "paradigm shift" to less effective communicating:
- Weed industry jargon and phrases out of your vocabulary. Replace terms like "drill down," "organic growth" and "key performance indicators" with words that translate to any audience.
- Drop the "set" on "skill set," "solution set," etc. It's the current "wise" we used a few years ago to create temperature wise, size wise, etc. and then dropped.
- Avoid the latest crazes. Don't use obscure phrases like "band width" and "net net" that leave your audience with more questions than answers.
Simple and specific wording encourages understanding, conveys your point and builds relationships with your audience.
