The concept of giving a speech induces nightmares, butterflies and tremors for days and even weeks before the event. So let's declare "No more public speaking!" Instead, think of your presentation as talking to someone with whom you have a relationship.
To move from presenting to creating a relationship with your audience:
- Relax and be yourself. Engage the group with your personality.
- Respond to facial or vocal reactions. It's okay to "chat" with individuals.
- Encourage feedback -- but keep it brief.
- Coax friendly acknowledgment of your glances as you look around the room.
Make your presentation a personal experience -- for you and your audience. You'll be less nervous and more approachable, and your anxieties will soon subside. After all, why be nervous when you're talking to people with whom you have a relationship?
