Communications Virtues for Virtual Communications

According to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, high-end videoconferencing systems will soon replace the majority of travel in our global work environment. This means executives must master the media skills of a professional broadcaster to truly translate these virtual meetings into dollar- and time-savings.

To be as effective on screen as you would be in person,

  • Speak as though your audience is sitting across from you.
  • Look directly into the camera, but avoid the "deer in the headlights" stare by blinking occasionally.
  • Place your notes beside the camera.  Looking down at your desk may well call attention to the bald spot or mashed hair you just spent 20 minutes trying to remedy.

Ultimately your goal is to create the same relationship you achieve when you are face-to-face.  Lights!  Camera!  Cue the executive!
